Kotagede is a sub district in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. First, Kotagede is a name of a town that called MataramIslamKingdom. And then now it is divided into Kesultanan Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Sultanate) and Kesunanan Surakarta (Dominion of the Sunan).
Kotagede is very famous with silver handcraft. Silver handcraft is usually sold in the galleries that are built in front of the house of the owners; it is usually built by Joglo type. In the south of the villages, there is a traditional market that is called Pasar Gede or often called Sargede. This traditional market is already economic activity center of people in Kotagede. There is Masjid Besar Avenue, in the south of Pasar Gede, there is a gateway with a long fortress protecting one of Mataram prosperity long time ago that still be well taken care.
Through the second gateway, there is a tall and strong wall about two meters with two streets in each side. It that is connected with a MataramKingdom’s graveyard and also Sendang Saliran (Saliran water source), a place that uses for taking a bath with traditional way. There are women and man widower sheds, but it is separated. The third gateway is the way to go to the Masjid Agung (Agung mosque) area. This mosque has Hindu-Buddha design, it can be seen from the carved object that almost adorn in every side of the mosque.
In the south of the mosque, there is a MataramKingdom’s graveyard complex and the relative too. Through in this complex, the tourists must wear Javanese traditional clothes and do tahlilan (pray together) before entering the graveyard. And then the tourists will go to the main building that became residing all of the kingdom’s family and relative.
